This collection of tales, present as their main character the ”kalikangiari”, the malevolent goblins, which according to folklore appear during the Christmas period for twelve days (December 25 – January 6). The book, that bears the signature of the printmaker Hambis Tsangaris, was created by the artist’s compelling desire to spread the rich Cypriot folk tradition of kalikangiari overseas. Simultaneously, as he himself mentions in his prologue, he addresses the Cypriots, urging them to gain more knowledge about their own folk tradition and cultural heritage, as well as the fellow friends from Central Europe who introduce their own elves, goblins and trolles to us through their illustrated books, thus is being offered as a gift in return. Through a rich illustration and accompanying narrations, myths, legends and reality of a tradition with deep roots are highlighted and blended together.

This publication presents paintings and handwritten texts by the folk artist Margarita A.Tsangari. For several months during the year of 1980, Margarita lived in Moscow with her son, the printmaker Hambis Tsangaris. At the urging of the latter, she will attempt to narrate a lifetime’s memories, through drawings and paintings. In a notebook with coloured pencils, on cardboards with tempera, a colourful world is depicted, an intimated world attached to her own soul. Through the rich pictorial material and the descriptions of the painter, reveals to the reader a work that ” …. carries dreams, stories, traditions, fairy tales and miracles …. carries the mythology of her childhood … An iconography full of light and colour … ‘‘, as mentioned by the art historian Natasa Ieridou, who prefaces the publication.
