The series Das Marienleben – The life of the Virgin (1503-1510), with 19 woodcuts, was first edited in 1511 as a series with text printed on the back of the paper. Based on The Holy Scriptures and the Apocrypha, it presents episodes of the Virgin’s life.
Mariens Templegang – The presentation of the Virgin in the Temple, is the 5th woodcut. At the centre, Mary climbs enthusiastically the stairs to the priests of the synagogue, on the left side. On the right side, her parents Joachim and Ann. Behind them, a rendition of paganism with the arch and the mythological deity. On the left side, moneychangers / traders, dressed as Durer’s time, a basket with breads and two lambs, symbols of the Christ.
